- Stylish space combat

- Frustrating PVP
- Not the Trek we had hoped for
Star Trek Online is a very forumlaic MMO. It's uses the tried and tested carrot and stick approach to traditional MMO gaming and as such, brings nothing new to the media. That said, the game is presented in such a way that is more engrossing than many others generic titles out there and does benefit from the Trek license enormously.
Set in the future Trek universe of 2409, your story begins as an ensign assigned to a small ship in the middle of a Borg invasion of Federation space and immediately thrusts you into STO's weakest feature, ground combat.
Ground combat itself is a rather simplistic affair. You maneuver your avatar and chosen bridge officers using the WASD keys and after targetting an enemy, mash one of two basic attacks and sit back and await the results. In addition to these, you make use of special abilities and "kits" which grant additional options in combat ranging from applying a quick heal to a wounder team mate or imobalizing your current target for a few seconds.
